.SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Thursday night) Issued at 1232 PM CDT Wed Oct 1 2025

VIS/IR satellite imagery thearly this afternoon again shows another largely mostly clear to clear sky day. Dew point temperatures remain in the mid 40s to mid 50s F, so while highs rise into the upper 80s to mid 90s F, lower 80s F higher elevations, conditions will continue to feel dry. Tonight with these dew point temperatures, mostly clear skies, and light winds, lows again drop into the mid 50s higher elevations and usual cooler spots of northern Lea County into northwest Permian Basin, with 60s F elsewhere. Light near surface winds and a stable ridging pattern aloft mean little in the way of change into tomorrow, with similar temperatures just a few degrees warmer. Expect similar temperatures to tonight for tomorrow night, albeit also a few degrees warmer owing to warmer daytime high temperatures. Continued warmer than average and dry weather is expected in the near term, but at least isolated rain chances may return to the area by the middle part of next week. Read the long term discussion for more.

.LONG TERM... (Friday through Tuesday) Issued at 1232 PM CDT Wed Oct 1 2025

Friday, West Texas and Southeast New Mexico will be under an upper ridge extending from Baja del Sur northeast into the Central Plains. This portends a rather dry forecast through next week, with rain chances slim-to-none. Highs Friday afternoon will start out the extended ~ 7-9 F above climatology.

Meanwhile, a trough over NoCal will swing through the western CONUS, arriving at the Four Corners by Saturday afternoon and nudging the ridge to the southeastern CONUS. Despite this, thicknesses and temperatures will increase through Sunday, which should be the warmest day of the extended as highs top out 10-12 F above normal.

Monday through Wednesday, temperatures will gradually decline an average of a degree or two each day under southwest flow aloft. By Wednesday afternoon, highs should be only in the 80s most locations...around 3-5 F above where they should be this time of year.
