Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 219 AM EDT Sat Sep 6 2025

.SYNOPSIS... A cold front will slowly press into the region today as a wave of low pressure tracks northeast along the front. The cold front will continue offshore tonight into Sunday. High pressure will build in from the west on Monday...crest over the area Tuesday...then move east of the region Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... A cold front will slowly press into the area today as a corridor of moisture supported by a shallow fast moving shortwave slides northeast along the front into our area. Very moist air will advect north into this frontal boundary with PWATS reaching close to 2 inches across southern areas and 1.5 inches over the north by this afternoon. Lift along this front will be supported by the approaching shortwave, a right rear jet entrance region to our north, and frontal convergence. This will produce a narrow band of moderate to heavy rain extending from the western highlands northeast into east central parts of our area with light to moderate rain north and south of this band. Some thunderstorms will be possible along the front. Instability is highest southwest of our area with the air becoming a bit more stable in the marine layer up in our area. However, thunderstorms with isolated heavy rain and gusty winds may stray into our region supported by the high moisture content and modest shear.

The shortwave and band of heavy rain will quickly lift away to the northeast tonight as the front very slowly continues to the south. This will allow rain to taper off to showers with the sky remaining mostly cloudy.

A weak secondary shortwave will slide northeast along the front on Sunday bringing another period of rain to the Downeast region. The north will remain mostly cloudy. An additional quarter inch of rain is possible Downeast along the coast. This secondary shortwave will quickly slide away to the northeast late Sunday allowing rain to taper off as the front continues off the coast.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... Sunday night will feature decreasing clouds as low pressure continues to exit through the maritimes and high pressure begins to build in from the west. Monday will be a dry day as high pressure continues to build across the region. Monday night is shaping up as a mainly clear one. The center of the high will build right across the area Monday night and this will result in mainly clear skies and light wind. This scenario should set the stage for the first decent shot of an early September frost across northern portions of the region. Based on the set up, blended in NBM25th percentile for min temperatures Monday night with areas of frost possible across the colder north along with patchy river valley fog. Lows Monday night will fall into the mid to upper 30s across the north with lower 30s expected across the normally colder low lying areas along with areas of frost.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... High pressure drifts east through the maritimes on Tuesday with mainly sunny skies and continued dry weather. Afternoon high temperatures and overnight lows will be below normal for early September. Tuesday night will be mainly clear to partly cloudy and not as cool as high pressure remains. Wednesday looks like a continued dry day as the area remains between an approaching cold front across Quebec and a stalled frontal boundary off the coast. Afternoon highs by Wednesday will be in the lower 70s and close to the seasonable normals for this time of year. Cold front crosses the region later Wednesday night through early Thursday. Looks like the frontal passage will be dry with limited moisture expected along the front. Turning cooler Thursday and Friday with mainly dry conditions expected. But it will certainly feel more fall like by the end of the week with afternoon highs averaging below normal by the end of the week.
