Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pendleton OR 457 PM PDT Sat Sep 20 2025

.UPDATED AVIATION.

.AVIATION...00Z TAFs...VFR conditions forecasted through the period for all sites. Mostly clear conditions starting the period, with low/mid level clouds pulling through the area in the second half of the period, due to the passage of a cold front.

The next weather system will bring in some gusty winds and chances of showers and thunderstorms over the next 24-hours. Higher confidence was noted in the Basin sites starting at around 21Z. Didn`t feel confident enough to only put a PROB30 in the DLS/YKM for tomorrow morning. Winds will be gustier as the front approaches the area tomorrow morning/early afternoon. Expecting most sites to reach 20-25 knots of gust by tomorrow morning. Winds could be gustier near stronger storms.

Although the forecast calls for VFR conditions, there`s low chances (10-30%) for sub-VFR CIG/VIS conditions. Stronger storms could dip CIG and VIS levels temporarily, but overall will be a dominantly VFR forecast.

DISCUSSION...Satellite imagery reveals multiple features of interest in the Pacific. A closed low centered off the coast of central California is advecting remnants of tropical moisture northward into the Blue Mountains region, leading to PWATs of 150-200% of normal. To the northwest, a closed low is churning in the Gulf of Alaska, and water vapor imagery shows a shortwave diving southeast towards the Pacific Northwest. Ahead of the shortwave, a frontal boundary is draped from Vancouver Island southwest into the Pacific.

Today, there is a slight chance (10-15%) of isolated showers and thunderstorms across the Blue Mountains, roughly from the Bend metro area eastward. Cross-Cascade pressure gradients will drive breezy winds through the Cascade gaps into wind-prone areas of the Columbia Basin today. While some areas will approach Red Flag thresholds for wind and low relative humidity, confidence was too low (
