.DISCUSSION... Issued at 310 AM CDT Sat Sep 6 2025

Today...

Temperatures this morning are currently sitting in the 40s, under mostly clear skies and light winds. Temperatures are expected to bottom out in the low to mid 40s, with isolated areas north of Highway 92 dropping into the upper 30s. Aloft, the area is under northwesterly flow as troughing resides over the Great Lakes. The cool start to the day will continue into the afternoon, with highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s, around 10 degrees below normal. Winds will remain light and variable throughout the day as high pressure sits over the area. Overall, a cool but pleasant fall-like day is expected for the area. Lows tonight will be in the mid 40s to low 50s.

Sunday...

Northwesterly flow aloft weakens somewhat on Sunday, as troughing begins to shift further east. This will result in another seasonably cool but pleasant day with highs in the 70s. Winds will be breezier on Sunday, with gusts around 20mph.

Monday...

A shortwave trough will move into the Plains on Monday, bringing a chance for rain to the area. An initial round of showers/storms is possible (15-25%) during the morning hours, moving in from the west, but is expected to dissipate/exit eastern portions of the area by the early afternoon. Highs on Monday will be in the 70s to low 80s with southerly winds gusting 20-25mph.

During the late afternoon-evening hours another round of showers/storms could develop (15-40%) along the surface trough/cold front. Capping aloft could inhibit storm development, especially if morning convection is more robust. Still, CAPE values of 1000-2000 J/Kg combined with shear of 20-30kts would support a few storms on the stronger side should they develop.

Tuesday Onwards...

Southwesterly flow-weak ridging builds over the area on Tuesday and continues through the rest of the forecast period as troughing sits over the western U.S. Near to above normal temperatures are expected Tuesday onwards, with highs in the 80s. A few scattered chances for precipitation (15-25%) litter the back half of the forecast period as shortwave troughs traverse this southwesterly flow aloft. The details on these chances will become clearer as we get closer and model spread decreases.
