.DISCUSSION...
- Meteorological Overview:
Weak ridging over the next couple days will keep the region warm and generally dry. An upper level trough arrives early Sunday morning bringing gusty winds to North-Central Montana, particularly along the Rocky Mountain Front, and a slight chance for precipitation primarily across southwest Montana.
Towards the middle of next week upper level ridging builds over the western CONUS allowing for warmer temperatures and generally dry conditions to return through the remainder of the work week.
- Forecast Confidence & Scenarios:
Sunday Winds:
Confidence is maintaining in the potential for strong, gusty winds on Sunday. As it stands, there is high confidence for wind gusts greater than 35 mph across most of North-Central Montana. Stronger winds will be found along the Rocky Mountain Front where there is a broad 60-80% chance of max wind gusts greater than 50 mph and a 50% chance for gusts greater than 60 mph along the wind prone areas. For cities like Browning and Cut Bank there is a 30-50% chance of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph.
For these locations this event is not expected to exceed high wind criteria, however, impacts to the public are still a concern. Strong crosswinds will be a concern along north-south roads, especially Highway 89 north of Choteau. High profile vehicles and those towing trailers will be at the greatest risk throughout the day. Additionally, deciduous trees still have their leaves which puts them at a greater risk for being impacted by strong wind gusts. Those recreating outdoors on Sunday, particularly if they are not used to strong winds, may be caught off guard.
Rain Chances Sunday:
There is around a 30% chance for isolated to scattered showers on Sunday, primarily across Southwest Montana. In general these showers are expected to be on the dry side with minimal accumulation expected. That being said locally higher amounts cannot be ruled out along the Madison and Gallatin ranges where there is a 30% chance of amounts greater than 0.10". Additionally there is a chance for a dusting of snow along the highest peaks of the Madison and Gallatin ranges early Monday morning but little to no snow accumulation is expected. -thor
