.DISCUSSION... Today through next Friday...
Conditions will remain warm and dry today under upper level ridging, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Air quality will gradually improve through the day into Sunday morning as the wildfire smoke moves out of the region.
On Sunday, upper level flow becomes more southerly, allowing monsoonal moisture (PWATs 160-180% of normal) to enter over the west by late Sunday. This will allow weak convection over the Beartooth/Absaroka mountains during the afternoon and evening hours Sunday and Monday. Models have continued to trend down on the precipitation potential and there is currently only a 20-40% chance of combined more than 0.1" over the Beartooth/Absaroka mountains and a less than 20% chance over the foothills Sunday and Monday. During this time, highs are expected to remain in the 80s.
Tuesday into Wednesday will see the ridge breaking down and a shortwave moving through the flow, bringing gradually cooling temperatures and a more widespread chance for light precip. Currently, there is a 20-40% chance of precip Tuesday afternoon and evening from Miles City west. Outside of the mountains, any accumulations are expected to remain light, with a less than 20% chance of more than 0.1". Over the Beartooth/Absarokas, there remains a 30% chance of more than 0.25" of precip. However, with the latest model runs, temperatures are cooling more slowly and limiting the potential for snow even over the highest peaks. Currently, there is a less than 10% chance of at least 1 inch Tuesday into Wednesday.
Into the end of the week, another disturbance is expected to impact the region. However, models still disagree on the timing and magnitude of this system. Temperatures will continue to cool into the end of the week, with highs near normal, in the 60s to low 70s, by Friday. Archer
.AVIATION...
Slant range visibility will continue to be reduced due to regional wildfire smoke, but there should be gradual improvement over the next 24 hours. Otherwise, VFR will persist through the period under strong high pressure aloft. JKL
