Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 130 PM EDT Mon Sep 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure building in from the north will bring cooler and drier weather to the area for the first half of the week. Mainly dry conditions will continue for the remainder of the week, with temperatures gradually warming as the week goes on.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Key Message(s):

- Breezy this afternoon

- Cool below normal temperatures tonight

Satellite imagery shows lower clouds continuing to diminish across the forecast area as drier air aloft moves into the area. Temperatures are expectedly cooler today with highs expected in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Drier air continues to filter into the region tonight with northeasterly flow under mostly clear skies across much of the region, though some thicker cloud cover may be over the eastern Midlands. A cool dry air mass will support overnight lows dropping into the mid to upper 50s in the northern and western Midlands with lower 60s elsewhere.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Key message(s):

- Cool and dry as high pressure fills into the region.

There is little change in the forecast with a calm middle section of the week as high pressure remains in place and weak upper troughing stays west. At the surface, strong high pressure centered over New England will maintain northeasterly flow and surface ridging while an inverted trough offshore reinforces a moisture gradient across the coastal plain. A strengthening surface ridging pattern pushes a reinforcing shot of drier air into the region on Wednesday with mostly sunny skies and slightly warmer, albeit near to slightly below normal, daytime temperatures.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Key message(s):

- Continued dry with slowly rising temperatures through the period.

Surface high pressure maintains a northeasterly flow and dry weather with rain not expected through the weekend. An upper trough remains positioned over the east coast through the long term which will reinforce a moisture gradient, but only for extreme eastern SC. Temperatures will begin to slightly rise to near seasonal values Thursday and Friday as the airmass moderates and northeasterly advection begins to weaken.

&&

.AVIATION /17Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... High confidence in VFR conditions through the 24hr forecast period.

High pressure continues to build into the region tonight with persistent northeasterly flow. Gusty winds through the afternoon should weaken a bit this afternoon before diminishing to 5 knots or less overnight. Dry air mass in place removes any cig/vsby concerns. Winds should pick back up to around 10 to 12 knots after sunrise with gusts to 20 knots as the inversion breaks.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...A dry air mass will be over the region this week and no significant aviation restrictions expected.

&&

.CAE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... SC...None. GA...None.
