Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 156 AM EDT Thu Sep 11 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure over the area will keep us dry into the weekend and early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 115 AM EDT Thursday...

Key Message:

1) Fair weather aside from clouds over the Piedmont.

Keeping the forecast dry with some periods of clouds and possibly fog this morning in the Piedmont. Some high-res data try to spit out some light showers/sprinkles east of Lynchburg/Danville today into tonight but the overall confidence is very low given trends.

After a cool start to the morning especially in the mountains, should see temperatures rise into the 70s areawide, and pass the 80 degree mark in the piedmont/foothills.

Tonight, similar to this morning, some clouds in the piedmont due to an easterly flow but overall mostly clear elsewhere with lows in the mid 40s to near 50 west, to lower to mid 50s east.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/... As of 150 AM EDT Thursday...

Key Message:

1) Quiet weather with a slight warming trend for this weekend.

Quiet weather will continue into the weekend as another surface high pressure system to our northeast will reinforce the wedge into the Appalachians. The wedge will weaken as the surface high moves further eastward but residual higher pressure will remain across the Mid-Atlantic and keep conditions calm. A perturbation traveling along a trough is projected to pass through the weekend and bring some cloud cover with it. A separate upper level low will also form off the southeastern United States coast by early next week, but there is some disagreement on its exact location and path. Otherwise, dew points will be in the upper 40s to upper 50s across the area, low temperatures will be in the 50s areawide and high temperatures will be a little on the warmer side in the upper-70s to mid-80s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 150 AM EDT Thursday...

Key Message:

1) Calm weather continues with subtle warming trend.

A weak cold front is projected to pass through early next week and a large high pressure system will move in and take over most of the forecast period. This system alone will put a strong cap on any precipitation chances for next week so the calm and quiet weather is likely to continue. An upper wave pattern next week looks to have a very sharp and narrow ridge over the central CONUS and troughing on either side of it. This omega block pattern looks to move slowly eastward next week while a separate upper level low forms off the southeastern coast. The behavior of the coastal low varies based on the model used but its path and formation look to be related to how the omega block behaves. This weather pattern will be monitored for any potential impacts to the area.

It will be a little more humid and warm next week, however. Dew points may get up into the lower 50s to lower 60s. Low temperatures may be between the 50s with lower 60s east of the Blue Ridge. Lastly, high temperatures may be in the mid-70s to mid-80s.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 125 AM EDT Thursday...

Increasing VFR cigs in the piedmont early in the period with low clouds close by with potential MVFR cigs and IFR vsbys per models at DAN/LYH after 09z, lasting til 12-13z. Confidence is moderate on this happening so have tempo groups in place.

Further west, VFR, aside from any fog at LWB, and potentially BCB. Drying conditions will continue to limit fog formation though.

VFR conditions will occur after 14z for all sites through the end of the taf period 06z/12.

A remark of AMD NOT SKED has been added to the KLWB TAF. Observations are not being reported between roughly 2300Z and 1230Z as the tower is not staffed during this time to take manual surface observations. Parts are on order for the automated system.

.EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

VFR conditions expected through early next week, outside any patchy late night/early morning mountain valley fog.
